WNDR (2017)

A choice between wander or wonder.

Meagan here. When I asked Jason what to name this project, he replied,

“WNDR

Supposed to be a choice between Wonder or wander. Since thats essentially what shes doing.

Wandering around wondering what her purpose is in life.”

We shot this in a night, wandering around different memorials on the National Mall. I remember going back to the apartment and immediately began editing the project. Jason was always very clear in his vision and knew exactly what he wanted. His confidence and understanding of visual language is what made working with him so seamless. His creative direction was inspiring and I always trusted that our art would turn out true to our vision.

When I showed him the first draft he said “Could you cut to black after she says i adore life". That was his only note. In his interpretation of the end of the video, she kills herself by driving over the bridge. I don’t interpret it the same way, but I thought I’d share his view.

In looking back on projects like this, I can see his aesthetic shine through. Personally, I see WNDR as a conceptual piece that Jason used as inspiration, to create the character of Kat in Northern Star.

I wanted to leave this note with some lyrics from the song. We didn’t use the full version in our piece, but he was enthusiastic about using the song. Knowing what I know now, I find the lyrics to be very poignant.

“I understand the urgency of life
In the distance there is truth which cuts like a knife
Maybe I will die maybe tomorrow so I need to say

I adore life

Do you adore life?”
